Successful Conduction of Memorial Seminar on "Remembering Professor K.A.M. Sa'aduddin: The Legacy and Future of Sociology in Bangladesh"

The Department of Sociology, Green University of Bangladesh, successfully conducted the memorial seminar titled ‘Remembering Professor K.A.M. Sa’aduddin: The Legacy and Future of Sociology in Bangladesh’ on Saturday, 08 August 2026, at 10:30 AM at the Seminar Hall (A-302).

The seminar was held in honor of Professor K.A.M. Sa’aduddin (1936–2026), a distinguished educator, freedom fighter, and pioneer of sociology in Bangladesh. The event was graced by:

• Chief Guest: Prof. Dr. Mohammad Shorif Uddin, Vice Chancellor, Green University of Bangladesh

• Special Guest: Prof. Dr. M Shahidullah, Dean, Green University of Bangladesh

• Chair: Prof. Dr. Abul Hossain, Chairperson, Department of Sociology, Green University of Bangladesh

• Distinguished Discussants: Prof. Dr. A.I. Mahbub Uddin Ahmed (Dhaka University), Prof. Sardar Aminul Islam (Dhaka University), Prof. Kazi Tobarak Hossain (University of Rajshahi)

Each speaker offered valuable reflections on Professor Sa'aduddin's legacy and his contributions to the development of sociology as a distinct academic discipline in Bangladesh. Discussants highlighted his critical, anti-imperialist, and anti-colonialist analytical lens, and how it shaped his pioneering work on social change, urbanization, poverty, social inequality, and criminology within the Bangladeshi context. Speakers further highlighted how his synthesization of west and east expedites the formation and reformation of the epistemic journey of sociology in Bangladesh today that paves the path towards creating the sociological imagination of this delta.

The seminar offered valuable reflections on Professor Sa'aduddin's legendary contributions for institutionalizing sociology as a matured, critical, as well as pragmatic discipline in the country with its signature in various fields like education, research, rethinking development and underdevelopment, and policy formation of the country.
